It is utterly wrong that any individual commits the crimes that have been committed. It is even worse that an institution should create the circumstances in which an individual criminal might flourish. But the signs of contradiction are, first, that the institution itself recognises that it has fostered the evil, and second, that it recognises it publicly. <br /><br />There is a tremendous danger of encouraging a sort of neo-Pelagian "aren't we good for saying how bad our predecessors were" but if we can get past that, and be an institution which confronts its past, we can help victims in other institutions to help them do something similar.<br /><br />Being Polyanna is my wont, and it may well be that in the morass of child sexual abuse there is no room for any sort of Polyannism, but a world in which all who need to be open about the horrors of the past <b><i>are</i></b> open, is better, I will state, than a world in which they aren't.Ttonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15185875893212146794noreply@blogger.com
