(Chestertonians out there??) The decline of the Conservative Party in Scotland and the symbolic force of Thatcher (both as icon within Conservatism and hate object in Scotland) is clearly something to do with it on an emotional/practical level. But why there are so few who can think past this to engage with the principles (as Scruton has) strikes me as odd -except as a knee jerk reaction to dominance of the loony progressives in the pro-Independence side.Lazarushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09716412032074416331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5078331897510807942.post-10558042784626001602014-08-18T06:15:04.483-07:002014-08-18T06:15:04.483-07:00I'm not sure what Chesterton would make of the...I'm not sure what Chesterton would make of the current Scottish independence debate, but he certainly had an interest in and affection for Ireland - describing it as 'a model nation' somewhere in his writings (I think!). I also wonder how much the memory of Thatcherite opposition to even devolution colours the 'right-wing' response to Scottish nationalism.Kennethhttp://www.secondspring.co.uknoreply@blogger.com
